AMAZING !!!
new art in poetry, i think… and great true story…
From a friend … he really make things different.. but different is better…
Prototype prose-poetry? I visualized a basic story-line concept and then tried to freestyle-narrate using linguistic features found in ASL, fused with finger-tutting sequences. For sometime now I’ve been fascinated with the possibilities of giving finger-tutting sequences ‘explicit meaning’ through the use of ASL handshapes, movements, palm-orientation, NMS, and location.
Dance is a great medium of expression, although it’s not an actual language, as a result the meaning it often wishes to convey is in nature, more implicit and abstract (not at all necessarily a negative aspect). This concept is still very much inside the creative-womb, I’m just toying with ideas and having fun. I edited the footage of my visual-vomit in an attempt to get rid of some of the thought-hesitation and to enhance the effects of other components.
Cochlear Implants: My issue isn’t with individuals who are over 18 years of age, it’s his/her decision. However, I strongly believe implanting babies + children to be unethical. Unfortunately the mainstream population is exposed to grossly different data streams than those of us in the Deaf community. Flow of information affects behavior - I think most people share similar ‘values’ when it comes to the well being of their children, nevertheless because of such wildly different data - there is a failure to connect cognitive maps to the vital behaviors that enforce their true value system and ultimately the determined outcome.
Sorry the video-quality is sub-par, the recording was for the idea-vault, but I thought I’d share — I hope it sparks others to engage and embrace their respective creativity.
In case you missed the ASL, ABC word-story, look for: #A-G-B-E-L-L used to describe the actual AG BELL lab in the story.

Was prompted to revisit this video from an interesting conversation I recently had with someone.
It’s been over two years since I decided to put that video out … I wish I could pursue the ASL and finger tutting idea further — there are so many talented individuals out there and I’d love to see what powerful things they could do with the concept. I have so many ideas and things I want to do right now — my “idea notepad” is getting longer and longer. It’s game over for that list once I catch a break from the studies.
I’m still hopeful that these ASL tutting vids will inspire someone creative to help push the concept to new levels.
How Most Hearing People Learn about Deaf People

CODA WORLD
THE HEARING THINK THEY KNOW ME
THEY THINK THEY FEEL MY PAIN
THEY LISTEN TO MY POETRY
AND WONDER WHO TO BLAME
HOW DID YOU LEARN TO TALK MY BOY
CAN’T YOUR MOM COME TO THE PHONE
WAS THAT A VOICE THAT CALLED YOUR NAME
AND SENT YOU RUNNING HOME
BUT THEY DON’T SEE THE BEAUTY
IN HANDS…

Codas: not deaf, but Deaf, not Hearing, but hearing.
It is the silence about the norm of silence that sustains the norm.
We’re talking about a change in a widely shared norm. People have to talk about a proposed change in behavior before it can be embraced. This calls for public discourse. Detractors will often suggest that it’s inappropriate to hold such an sensitive discourse. I don’t envision this being a popular perspective, however, one must ignore those who seek silence instead of healthy dialogue.
To know, and not to do, is really not to know.
Why do I believe we need to have such a crucial conversation? Not everybody shares the same pool of meaning. Our opinions differ. I believe one thing, you believe another. I have one history, you another. We to need encourage all ideas out into the open, to ensure that everyone adds their meaning to the shared pool (regardless if we agree with every idea or not).
The Pool of Shared Meaning is a measure of a group’s IQ. The larger the shared pool, the smarter the decisions.

- I read this a few years ago and it made me feel so elated knowing we had a right to address ourselves as an ethnic group.
